Choosing Bathroom Plants

Imagine your bathroom transformed into a lush garden. Even if your bathroom doesn't have a lot of light, you can bathe among bright colored flowers and leafy plants, plants can bring the freshness of the outdoors into your bathroom. They liven the space with colour and fragrance, while also absorbing a bit of the extra humidity.

There are numerous plants that are ideal for the bathroom. Tropical plants are a wonderful option for their adaptability to most bathrooms as well as for the exotic touch that they bring to any space. Let's assume that most bathrooms have low light, high humidity and warm temperatures.

Most plants prefer around 80 percent humidity, the majority of households offer between 20 and 60 percent. Because the bathroom is the most humid section of the house, it makes sense to put plants there. This level of humidity is perfect for tropical plants. What's more, warm bathroom temperatures are ideal for tropical plants.

If you decide to turn your bathing space into a luxurious botanical garden, The National Kitchen and Bath Association have a few ideas on how to display those precious plants. To add an exotic touch to larger bathrooms, consider placing poles across a portion of the ceiling from which to hang plants. Freestanding shelves can be placed against an open wall space. Glass shelving adds a bit more elegance to this display method.

If you have a bathtub, you may consider installing a special alcove for plants or even a greenhouse window. However, be sure to protect these plants with a door or curtain from water spray and steam.

Depending upon the type of bathroom you have, there are different plants that experts recommend. If you have a lot of light, you can look into orchids, azaleas or Kimberly ferns. If you have a bit less light, consider Chinese ferns or peace lilies. If you have little to no natural light and only one bulb, you might try dumb cane or snake plant.

To compensate for a lack of natural light, try a combination of incandescent and fluorescent lights. If you are already remodeling your bathroom or building a new one, you could install a skylight. These windows flood the bathroom with plenty of natural light without taking away your privacy. Remember to turn your plants so that all sides receive an equal amount of light.
